The number of schools and enrolment of pupils have increased in Dubai as parents and students prefer private schools over public educational institutions.

Dr Abdullah Al Karam, Director General of the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), said that student enrolment in private schools have more than doubled over the last decade.

Hailing the private education sector role, Al Karam said private schools were more efficient and provide good customer service.

The KHDA director general was speaking at the International and Private Schools Education Forum in Dubai on Thursday.

International consulting firm Booz & Co. said recently that it expects 54 per cent growth in private school enrolments in Dubai and Abu Dhabi by 2010 while the total market value of private education is forecast to grow to between $2.84 billion and $3.87 billion by 2020. Current market value of private education is estimated at $1.4 billion.

He also emphasised that KHDA is focusing on transparency and making schools accountable. Al Karam said the Authority is looking into further improving quality and standard of private schools in the emirate.

He also highlighted that the private school enrolment will increase globally.
