Police seize more cars with blurred plates

Abu Dhabi police seized 21 more cars on highways for smudging or covering their number plates to shun being caught by speed cameras planted on the roads as part of an ongoing drive to curb accidents.

A police officer said the vehicles had been seized over the past weeks on motorways and they had been impounded to face penalties of at least Dh20,000.

“Some of them had tarnished their number plates with chemical substances while others just twisted their plates to conceal the number…other drivers hid the number with chains to dodge police cameras,” said Colonel Hamad Al Baloushi, director of the external roads division at the Abu Dhabi police.

“They think that they can dodge the cameras or evade punishment…but they are wrong as our police and civilian cars are patrolling the roads every day.”

Baloushi said offenders could be jailed and fined at least Dh20,000 according to the UAE traffic laws.

Abu Dhabi police said last week they had seized five cars from Saudi Arabia with smudged plates in a bid to avoid being caught by speed cameras after entering the UAE.
