‎Thunderstorms and fresh winds will affect parts of the UAE and Oman over the next 48 hours as a depression over the Arabian Sea moves westwards.

According to a detailed update issued late evening on October 13, the cloud bands of the looming depression lay approximately 460km off the Oman coastline.

Both the UAE’s National Center for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) and the Omani Met office have said rainfall and possible thunderstorms will affect several coastal areas, commencing Wednesday, followed with fresh winds and rough seas in the region.

“The eastern region of the country will experience rainfall over the next 48 hours as a result of the depression over the Arabian Sea,” an NCMS spokesperson told Emirates 24|7.

“Areas affected would be the eastern region, namely Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, parts of Sharjah, Hatta and even Al Ain.”

However, the NCMS reiterated that there was no forecast of waterlogging in low lying areas that were affected earlier in June when Cyclone Ashobaa made landfall in Oman.

“Cyclone Ashobaa was a much stronger weather system, compared to what we are experiencing now,” said the spokesperson.

“We are warning people of rough seas in the Arabian Gulf and the Oman Sea but nothing that severe. People are advised to take precaution while visiting beaches or heading out to sea.”

Oman’s Public Authority for Civil Aviation (PACA) has issued warnings for Muscat, Al Buraimi, Mussandam and other directorates to take precaution over the next 72 hours.

“The cloud bands from the tropical storm is expected to affect coastal areas of South Ash Sharqiyah by Wednesday afternoon and gradually affecting governates of Muscat, north and south Ash Sharqiyah, north and south Al Batinah, Al Buraimi, Ad' Dahira, Mussandam and Al Wusta within the next three days associated with rain, occasional thundershowers and fresh winds,” said PACA.

“The sea will be moderate to rough along the Sultanate.”

People in these areas in Oman are being warned to stay away from low lying areas and avoid crossing wadis and keep abreast of bulletins.
