RAK restaurant caught serving leftovers

Municipal authorities in Ras Al Khaimah shut a newly-opened Shawarma restaurant after it was found to be serving meat used in the previous day.

Inspectors had watched the restaurant following tip offs from some residents before they raided the place and caught workers red-handed.

Officials did not name the place but described it as a large Shawarma and grill restaurant which they said had become popular in a short period of time despite its relatively high prices, with one Shawarma sandwich sold for Dh7.

After receiving information from residents, inspectors waited until the restaurant began closing after mid night and watched its workers from a distance.

“Our inspectors noticed that the workers took what is left of the meat and put it in the refrigerator,” said Khalifa Al Maktoum, Director of Public Health at the municipality.

“But they decided to raid the restaurant on the next day to make sure that meat is served again to customers…after they were sure about such a practice in the morning, the inspectors raided the restaurant and shut it down.”

The Arabic language daily Alkhaleej quoted Maktoum as saying the municipality also imposed a “large” fine against the restaurant.
