Ramadan Kareem: Holy month in UAE begins today

The UAE Ramadan Moon Sighting Committee has announced that Ramadan in the UAE for the Hijri year 1436 will begin on Thursday, June 18.

Following the committee’s meeting at the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, investigation, application of relevant Sharia laws, and contacts with neighbouring countries, Justice Minister Sultan bin Saeed Al Badi said in a statement that Wednesday June 17, 2015 will be the last day of the Hijri month of Sha’ban of 1436 H. Therefore, Thursday, June 18, 2015, will be the first day of Ramadan.

Al Badi congratulated President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, General Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces and Their Highnesses the Supreme Council Members and Rulers of the Emirates, on the advent of the Holy Month of Ramadan, and prayed to Allah Almighty to keep His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed in good health for the sake of his country, Arab Nation and Muslim Nation.

Saudi Arabia

The fasting month of Ramadan will begin on Thursday.  Wednesday is the end of the month of Sha’ban, Saudi Arabia announced on Tuesday.

In a statement carried by local newspapers, the Saudi Supreme Court said the moon had not been sighted on Tuesday, which means Ramadan will begin on Thursday.

“Tomorrow [Wednesday, June 17] is the end of the month of Sha’ban and Thursday is the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan,” the court said.
