The life of a 95 year old prostate patient has been saved through a rare laser prostatectomy conducted at the Urinary Tract Section of the University Hospital Sharjah’s Urology Department.

The patient was discharged from hospital in less than 24 hours after surgery. This was a milestone in the history of prostate surgery in the UAE and region.

The surgical intervention was performed as the patient suffered from difficulty voiding and psychological problems due to failure to get accurate diagnosis and effective treatment for his condition after consulting numerous medical centres.

Commenting on the surgical intervention, Prof. Dr Mohammed Rajae, Urology Consultant at the University Hospital Sharjah, said: "This surgery was a great challenge due to numerous restrictions including the age of the patient, anesthesia difficulties, and post operation complications. The decision to perform this surgery was taken after every necessary measure was taken".

Prof. Rajae added: "I am delighted to say that age is not a barrier to conduct surgical intervention when the experience and facilities are there."

The patient’s family expressed their appreciation for the medical team’s ability to end their father’s chronic pain.
