An Emirati bridegroom divorced his bride by sending her a text message on her mobile phone while she was with her mother and his mother, shopping for their wedding party.

Another citizen divorced his wife after receiving a phone call from an unknown girl telling him that his new wife was in a relationship with another man. Two other Emiratis divorced their wives for splurging money on henna (skin dye) and the wedding dress.

These cases were among the 10 strangest divorces recorded in the UAE over the past years, according to Fouzieh Rabei, Head of Family Planning at the Social Affairs Ministry, who was quoted by the Arabic language daily Emarat Alyoum.

Following are the 10 cases:

* A UAE groom divorced his bride by sending a SMS on her mobile phone while she was with her mother and his mother shopping for their wedding party. The incident was triggered by an argument between the two mothers over the items to be bought, prompting his mother to call her son and complain while crying. “Without exploring the matter, the bridegroom just sent a text message to his bride’s mobile phone divorcing her on their wedding eve,” Rabei said.

* An Emirati man divorced his wife after receiving a call from an unknown girl telling him his new wife had an affair with another man. “He divorced her during the first week of their wedding while the decorations for their wedding were still up.”

* A man divorced his new wife after learning she had spent Dh150,000 on her wedding dress and borrowed money to fund her wedding. She had concealed this from her husband but had to tell him in order to pay her debt.

* A newly-wed Emirati woman said she was divorced after her husband learned that she spent nearly Dh5,000 on henna for her wedding. She said he accused her of being “unnecessarily extravagant on trifle things".

* An Emirati woman said she became troubled after finding an unknown number on his mobile phone. After he refused to delete that number, she asked him for a divorce, which he eventually did.

* An Emirate woman said she asked for a divorce on the wedding eve after her mother-in-law changed the wedding cards. She said the groom sent her a divorce while she was still with her family preparing to join him. “She said the groom sent her a divorce and married another woman on the same day.”

* An Emirati woman said she asked for a divorce five months after the marriage after her husband started to suspect and beat her. She said he would not allow her to speak on the phone in his absence or go out of the house, adding he later divorced her.

* A newly-wed Emirati woman was divorced after she started to cause trouble for her husband for supporting his mother and little brothers following the death of his father. “The husband decided to choose his mother and divorced his wife."

* An Emirati woman returned to her family and filed for a divorce a month after the marriage. She said that she found texts from girls sent to her husband’s mobile phone before the marriage and that she suspected he had relationships before he married her. She filed for a divorce because she feared he would continue his relationships, prompting him to agree to her divorce request.

* A newly-wed man divorced his wife because she spent more time with her family that at home. He said he had asked her to be sensible but she refused, prompting him to hit her. She then asked for a divorce, which he quickly accepted.
