Safe to use Emirates ID to withdraw money from ATM, assures Eida chief

People need not be afraid of using their Emirates ID to withdraw money from ATMs since it is used only to confirm identity and no financial information is stored on the card, according to Dr Ali Al Khouri, Director General of Emirates Identity Authority (Eida).

Al Khouri said the Emirates ID card has global safety standards and will be increasingly used in future to complete banking transactions in the UAE, according to report in the Arabic daily newspaper ‘Emarat Al Youm’.

He also said Eida has undertaken some projects in cooperation with banks, including one to connect banks with the digital attesting centre and another to enable labourers to use Emirates ID cards in bank transactions.

Al Khouri said this on the sidelines of the Government Data Forum held on Monday in Abu Dhabi. Greater use of Emirates ID in banking depends on the willingness of banks, he added.

The subject will be discussed soon in a seminar in which the UAE Central Bank and commercial banks will be participating, he added.
