A massive fire gutted the warehouse of Safeer Mall in the industrial area of Sharjah on Sunday night.

The blaze that erupted at about 7.30pm destroyed the mall's warehouse, located behind Sharjah City Centre, and partially damaged adjacent offices.

Safeer Mall's products including food items and garments were completely gutted and the fire spread to the adjacent Gulf Contracting Company.

Strong winds made it difficult for fire fighters to operate. It took several hours before the blaze was brought under control.

Meanwhile, Colonel Wahed Essa Al Serkal Director-General of Sharjah Civil Defence was quoted by 'Al Ittihad' newspaper as saying that they coordinated with civil defence units of all emirates in addition to the units of armed forces and Sharjah Municipality.

There has been no reports of casualties so far. Fortunately, employees in the adjacent offices left by 5pm that eveing so there were no loss of lives, said sources from Gulf Contracting Company.

Al Serkal said they even put up a mobile field hospital next to the site and cut off electricity and gas supply to the buildings in the area immediately as a precautionary measure. And traffic was immediately diverted to alternate routes.

It is alleged chemicals stored in Al Nadha Contracting Company sparked off the blaze.
