Say goodbye to the Dh30 movie ticket prices in the UAE

Grand Cinemas last to raise their prices this week

The cost of watching a film at the cinema in the UAE will cost you Dh5 more – across all theatres.

The cost of movie tickets have gone up from Dh30 to Dh35 with Grand Cinemas, who until now had held off raising prices, finally caving in to “economic circumstances”.

Vox Cinemas increased ticket prices at the end of 2011 and Reel Cinemas upped their prices in February this year.

Grand Cinemas is at Al Ghurair Centre, Wafi City, Dubai Festival City, Ibn Battuta Mall, Mercato Mall, AUH Mall, Manar Mall, Mega Mall and Sahara Centre.

Reel Cinemas is at Dubai Mall and Dubai Marina Mall.

Vox Cinemas is at Ajman City Centre, Deira City Centre, Mall of the Emirates, Marina Mall and Mirdif City Centre.

Over 48 hours since the increase, Grand Cinema technical director Andy Fordham explained that the move was made after much consideration.

“The cost of running a business has gone up, but we had not increased our prices for the last six years. So, this increase is just a natural reaction to what’s happening around us,” he added.

A ticketing officer at Reel Cinema agreed. “There’s been no increase in the prices for so long, so this was bound to happen.”

Although many cinegoers have used social media sites to voice their objection, with some even claiming they would have to explore other cheaper options, the cinema houses claim there’s been no drop in the business so far.

“Even during recession, people went out and watched films,” insisted Andy.

Guys, why are you making big story of this issue, you can find the movie on the net same day of his first show in theatre, so just download the movie, and watch it in your place and eat the food you like.

The cost of running a business has only been going DOWN not up. Look around, office rents are down, salaries are down and so are advertising costs. Businesses have it the best right now.

Maybe the cinemas too needed to join the bandwagon when food outlets, restaurants and everyone else increased their prices. However, in my opinion the prices of the snacks is something that could be considered for a reduction... especially water and soft drinks as their margins on these seem pretty high... not to mention the cost of popcorn and nachos!

I believe that it is very realistic and reasonable decision to hike the price by sheer AED 5. We should spend happily for the sake of entertainment.

Movies are a business like any other business. When a price of a shirt or table or soft drink goes up, its for the same reasons, Rising costs. Cinemas are wants not needs, and the increase is only 5Dhs or as someone pointed out 16%. If you can not spare 5 Dhs extra for watching a movie, simply don't. The real concern is when needs (food for example) increase in cost, especially with something you would require daily.

The price of Dh5/- increase is OK but the price of snacks received in theater should be decreased as outside food is not allowed. There should also be choice of sandwiches also available instead of only popcorn and drinks.

No wonder piracy is becoming so common and a better option. Even if you know it's wrong, you can't help yourself.

There is no policy; anyone can increase the price. Is this increase after the government approval?

Almost all theatres are having less audience unlike before when go for watching movie now it will get empty soon then they may introduce offer through bankers - business tactics to increase and adjust.

Prepare for the world of piracy to take a higher toll due to this slight 'bound to happen' increase, for a group of 4, we are talking about Dhs 20 increase, not many can afford that in such a market where there is no raise in income for many.

so what if the pricing of cinema tickets is 16% higher. during these times of recession, all consumers should have received atleast 16% hike in income.
