Some Abu Dhabi bakeries sell 20% less bread... at same price

Some bakeries and groceries in Abu Dhabi have reduced the weight of bread by nearly 20 per cent, according to a report in ‘Emarat Al Youm’, quoting customers.

The report also quotes a source at the Higher Committee for Consumer Protection confirming that this practice could be an indirect ploy to increase the prices of bread.

The report states that the declining weight of bread is not confined to one type - but includes white bread, along with Egyptian and Afghan breads, and some baked pies.

Bakeries in Abu Dhabi confirmed to Emarat Al Youm that some bakeries have resorted to reducing the weight of bread due to rising prices of raw materials.

The report has the bakeries confirming that the Economy ministry has rejected requests from several bakeries to hike the prices by up to 40 per cent.

The Ministry of Economy has warned bakeries over non-compliance of the weight of bread in accordance with the decision of the Higher Committee for Consumer Protection.

Dr Hachim Al Nuaimi, Director, Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Economy warned that the Ministry will impose fines "of between Dh10,000 to Dh100,000 against repeated violators.

The ministry also said it would impose fines of up to Dh100,000 on bakeries found with repeated violations.

Emirati Maryam Al Falahi, says that bread is a key component in all her family meals.
