With the UAE entering its winter season, weather experts expect temperatures to drop to as low as 0 degrees, an expert said.

Speaking to Emirates 24|7, a weather forecaster from the National Centre of Metrology and Seismology in Abu Dhabi said that temperatures in some parts of the country have already gone down to 6 degrees at night.

He said that this situation will last for the next 40 days as the country as the GCC region has entered the ‘Mirba'aniyyah’  - a colloquial name of the first 39 days (or 40 days if it is a leap year) of winter as used in most areas of Arabia. It starts around the 7th of December and ends on the 14th of January, passing in three phases each of 13 days.”

“In the UAE, some areas such as Raknah - which is a suburb of Al Ain city - has witnessed very low temperatures which reached to around 6 degrees at night. This is same for some other mountain areas in the country.”

He pointed out that during the early morning, the weather is too cold, but by midday, it becomes hot.

“This is so because of the country’s geographic location. The land warms up due to the sun heat.”

Keep it warm

He added that the best solution in such case is that parents must avoid dressing their kids up in heavy winter cloths in the morning hours.

“They should make them wear long cotton clothes. This is the best solution to keep kids warm in the morning and not too hot during mid-day.”

Average temperatures for December

He added that the average maximum temperatures for the month will be between 22.2 degrees to 27.1 degrees, and the minimum temperatures will be between 7.9 degrees to 18.9 degrees.

“However, this will not prevent the temperatures to go up to reach 35 degrees like what happened in December 1998 when the highest temperatures of 35 degrees for the month of December was recorded in Al Ain Airport. The lowest temperatures for this month was recorded in Ras Al Khaimah where it reached -0.7 degrees in 2004.”
