'Sorceress' extorts Dh4m from Emirati mom over 'jinn' claim

A woman claiming to be an exorcist embezzled more than Dh4 million from an Emirati woman telling her that her daughter would not be able to marry because she was gripped by jinn (spirits), a newspaper reported on Sunday.

Worried for her daughter for not getting married despite her growing age, the Emirati woman was told by one of her daughter’s acquaintances that she could take the girl to a friend who can identify her problem and solve it.

A few days later, that woman told the Emirati mother that she met a female exorcist who told her that her daughter was under a magic spell and that a male jinn has gripped her and insisted on marrying her. She told the mother that the jinn is a “leader” in his clan and that he would not let her daughter marry any man.

“The girl told the mother that the woman can handle the problem and cure her daughter, but she made clear that this woman charges very high fees for her services,” Al Bayan daily said without making clear where in the UAE that woman lives.

It said the mother later agreed to that woman’s demands and paid her Dh4million plus all her daughter’s jewellery, worth around Dh700,000.

A few days later, the woman demanded an additional sum but the mother refused on the grounds she could not afford it.

“The mother told that woman that she had already taken a loan to pay her and that she cannot afford the rest. The mother then thought of selling her house but discovered she could not because it was granted to her by the government,” it said.

“The paper said the case is still in UAE courts and that the mother is accusing that women of deception and extortion.
