Storm batters Dubai Silicon Oasis: cars damaged, houses flooded

Scaffoldings of various construction sites also collapsed

Dubai Silicon Oasis seems to have come off worse for the wear after a severe wind and rain showers lashed parts of the emirate yesterday evening.

Scaffoldings of various construction sites collapsed even as workers stopped work and rushed to safety.

One of the buildings facing the main road and Academic City directly bore the brunt of the incoming storm.

The glass facade at the entrance was shattered with the force of the wind.

Many residents of La Vista 7 complained that rainwater had flowed into apartments.

At least one motorist was severely injured and had to be rushed to hospital after a scaffolding fell on his car.

Heavy rains flooded valleys in the Eastern and Northern Emirates and there were also reports of big water ponds on the roads.

The rains started on Sunday evening on the eastern front - mainly Kalba area. However, other parts of the city were also flooded.

Traffic on major highways including Emirates Road and Sheikh Zayed Road was at a snail pace on Monday evening as the visibility was reduced considerably.

Many other vehicles too were also damaged in the storm.

This storm is nothing to the ones seen in India, where storms last for as long as 4 months.

I came home in the evening in Skycourts to find a lot of stuff in my terrace: Underwear, a toy car, 3 cardboard boxes, a BBQ cover, a Tshirt with I love Justin Bieber and a bucket of cigarettes buts. All floating in about 1" of water. Too bad i was not at home and i missed the spectacle.
