Teacher sacked for offending UAE sentiments

Teacher replaced the phrase 'I love UAE' written by a student on a balloon

A Scottish teacher at the girls college of technology in Ras Al Khaimah was sacked for offending the UAE after he modified a phrase written by a student on a balloon to make it look that she hates the UAE.

The female students had just finished decorations to mark 40 years of the UAE union when Gerald Harrison entered class.

“He saw that one student had written on a balloon ‘I love the UAE’….he grabbed the balloon and replaced that phrase with ‘I hate the UAE’….he then put the balloon under his leg and popped it,” 'Emarat Al Youm' daily said.

Quoting college officials, the paper said when one student asked the teacher why he had done this, he simply replied that he hated the colours of the UAE flag.

“The students then went to the management and filed a complaint…the teacher was summoned and was accused of insulting the UAE flag,” the paper said.

“He admitted what he had done but said he did not mean to offend the UAE…the management then decided to sack the teacher and referred his file to the central management at the college of technology in Abu Dhabi.”

The hypocrisy of the Scot, reaping the benefits of the UAE. I love the State and wouldn't mind making it my second home.

We all have a moral obligation to respect every country's traditions and cultural values. We do not have the right to perform such actions about any nation. I hope that this teacher will have learnt a lesson! I have been living in the UAE for the last 6 years, and this country needs to be praised for it's hospitality and the respect that they extend to people from other nationalities.

His behaviour is a breach of the duty of trust and care toward his students, who were engaged in a valid and laudable activity. This man should not be trusted to teach young people.
