Tougher penalties for tailgating

The UAE is planning to introduce harsher penalties against motorists coming too close to other cars on the country’s key roads, Dubai’s traffic police chief has said.

Brigadier Saif Al Mazroui said Dubai’s traffic police technicians have developed systems that can hunt drivers who “aggressively” tailgate other cars on key roads, adding that such behavior has caused major accidents.

His figures showed road accidents killed 112 people in Dubai in the first half of 2016 compared with 77 in the first half of 2015, an increase of about 45 per cent.

Quoted by 'Emarat Al Youm' daily, he said key causes of the mishaps included speeding, reckless driving, failure to leave enough distance with other vehicles, lack of concentration and attention, jumping the red lights and non-respect of traffic rules.

“Dubai’s police technicians have developed advanced systems that are capable of detecting drivers who aggressively stick to the back of other vehicles on key roads. The Federal Traffic Council has demanded tougher penalties against those drivers,” he said.
