Dubai police has cautioned an Emirati man for violating traffic rules, after he was spotted driving a American-styled police patrol car along Jumeriah Street with flashing overhead lights on Monday.

His car was impounded and the driver has been summoned to the traffic department for questioning.

According the Dubai police, the “vintage Chevrolet Impala SS model in black and white colour” was seized after the driver turned on the red-and-blue overhead lights to “impress some on-lookers”.

A traffic official who was off-duty had spotted the car and had informed the duty officers about it.

According to the official, although the driver did produce a permit by the Department of Tourism in Sharjah his car is not registered.

“Every car on the road needs to be registered,” the official stressed.

It did not include the stamp for setting up over-head lights, nor painting it like an American patrol car.

These are stark violations of the traffic rules, added the official.

“Such vehicles do get permits for museums, but they are not for driving around.”

The officials did not elaborate about how long the car would be kept away from the roads.

The issue has been escalated to the higher authorities in the department who will then issue the final penalty.
