Two men – including one fugitive – have been charged for forging credit cards and defrauding 19 shops for over Dh178,000.

The Dubai Criminal Court heard a case of a jobless Pakistani who allegedly with a fugitive forged 15 credit cards and used authentic labour cards for defrauding shops.

According to the accusation sheet, on and prior to January 2, TBA, 42, who holds Oman residency, forged two labour cards in the names of Zubair Ali Mohammed and Mohammed Akhtar Mohammed.

He allegedly used the labour cards for buying jewellery and cargo from 19 companies using 15 forged credit cards.

TBA, is also accused of impersonating another person during investigations as he unrightfully claimed his name was Mohammed Bilal.

Imad Abbas, 46, Iranian owner of a jewellery shop at the Gold Souq, testified that at around 8pm on January 2, TBA visited his shop and chose six bracelets of Dh11,000 value and a golden chain with a value of Dh4,678. He made the payment using credit card from Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank.

“The payment was not processed when passing the card in to the slot of the machine which is of Emirates Bank. The buyer gave me another master card of Emirates Bank. Upon my request he presented a labour card carried the name of Zubair Ali Mohammed and the both credit cards he showed me carried the same name. The second card worked and the payment operation was successfully processed and the buyer signed on the receipts and the shop’s bill.

“As I suspected the buyer, I notified the police and made him wait until I pack the pieces he bought in special boxes and packing. Police soon arrived and arrested him,” Abbas testified.

Police checked with the bank and found out that the nine credit cards that have been confiscated from him were forged. In coordination with the bank, police tracked all purchases made through the cards.

Ali Juma, from the Gold Souq police station, testified that Dh15,660 were also confiscated from the accused who was carrying a bag containing nine credit cards and two labour cards with two different names.

“The accused confessed and said he also has a partner. He confessed that he had destroyed some forged cards after using them for one time,” Juma testified.

The Court will reconvene on May 4.
