Under the patronage of the Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid al Maktoum Award for Medical Sciences, the 8th edition of the UAE Cancer Congress opens today in Dubai, and is expected to be attended by more than 1,700 participants from around the world.

Held under the theme, ‘Promoting Excellence in Oncology’, the conference includes workshops, plenary sessions, abstract presentations, corporate symposia, an exhibit hall, and networking receptions.

Cancer has become one of the top causes of death worldwide, nearly 14 million people are annually diagnosed with the disease, and 8.2 million cancer-related fatalities recorded, Dr. Manal Omran Taryam, the CEO of Primary Healthcare of the Dubai Health Authority, DHA, said in her opening speech while citing World Health Organisation, WHO.

Yet, the WHO expects a 70 percent increase in cancer incidence over the next two decades, she added.

"This event is being held at a time of great challenges in terms of treatment and healthcare services, as we have to face the various diseases indiscriminately attacking all age groups throughout our communities. This imposes a great challenge and responsibility on all scientists and professionals in order to control cancer and its implications," Dr. Taryam noted.

She said, "In the UAE, specifically Dubai, we realised the dangers that threaten the future of humanity and hinder sustainable development. These threats resulting from cancer and other chronic and communicable diseases constitute a serious challenge to our most precious asset, human capital. DHA has built its developmental strategy on integrated pillars of heath care, preventive medicine, and treatment. Cancer is no exception to this rule, and the authority is working continuously to support and develop research efforts in this domain. The authority regards cancer as a top priority, and works with high focus on fighting this fatal disease and limiting its implications on societies."

Dr. Shaheenah Dawood, the Congress President, said that this year, the UAE Cancer Congress will be covering current leading topics on multi-disciplinary cancer treatments, including breast, lung, stomach, head and neck, blood and other key areas. "This year, we have also introduced a 'Challenge the Expert' session, where all the experts will be put on the spot and answer delegates’ questions, discuss their difficult cases and ultimately gain some insight into how to manage them."

The DHA, the Union for International Cancer Control, UICC, and Breast Surgery International, BSI, are supporting the congress.
