The general conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on Thursday unanimously re-elected the UAE to membership of the board of governors for the period of 2013-2015.
The board of governors, which consists of 35 members, is the most important decision-making body of the agency.
At periodic meetings, the board discusses reports of the director-general, and endorses recommendations and decisions relevant to the agency's programmes and budget.
It also discusses competent reports on verification activities regarding the application of the safeguards system and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
The membership allows the UAE to play an active role in determining the policies and work of the agency in the fields of nuclear energy, nuclear safety and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons, consistent with the public policy of the state.
The UAE had previously occupied a seat on the board from 2010-2012.
