Police receive 1391 rain calls in Abu Dhabi

LATEST UPDATE: The Central Operations Room at the General Headquarters of Abu Dhabi Police received 1, 391 phone calls from 12 midnight to 04am during the windy rains, which lashed Abu Dhabi and its environs yesterday and at dawn today.

Lt. Colonel Nasser Suleiman Al Maskari, Head of Abu Dubai Police Central Operations Section, said the phone calls reached their climax between 02am- 03am, registering over 560 calls made by public to report the falling of trees and breaking of building glasses as a result of the torrential rains.

He stressed the keenness of Police on ensuring the public safety and security round the clock, noting that the operations room is ready to respond in the event of emergency.

Weather cloudy today

The UAE’s National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) predicted that the weather will  cloudy to partly cloudy and hazy on Saturday morning.

The amount of clouds decreases gradually starting from the west, with a chance of rainfall over eastern and southern areas, especially during morning period.

Winds will be fresh to strong at times especially over the sea, causing blowing dust and sands over open land reducing the horizontal visibility.

The winds will be northwesterly at / 35 - 55 Km/hr in general, reaching 75 km / hr over the sea and open land at times with cloud activity.

The relative humidity will increase by night and early morning. Sea will be rough to moderate over Arabian Gulf and moderate over Oman Sea. The wind speed will be less by Sunday night and Monday morning.

Rains in Western Region

The Western Region witnessed yesterday rains, ranging between medium to light. The rains, which continued till the early morning hours,  were associated with strong winds, thunder and lightning. 

Meanwhile, medium rains also lashed Madinat Zayed and its suburbs. The rains were reported in Delma Island, Traif area, Merfa', Sala', Ghayathi and Liwa.

Rain, dusty winds, cooler weather and rough seas

The UAE’s National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has predicted unstable weather will continue over the country, increasing amount of clouds over scattered areas with some towering clouds and a chance of rain with different intensity, significant drop in temperature on some areas.

Winds will also be southwesterly, northwesterly / 25 – 45kmph in general, reaching 70kmph over the sea and open land at times with cloud activity.

Cloudy / partly cloudy weather  and hazy at times, the  amount of clouds decreasing  gradually  over scattered areas starting from west, with  a chance of rainfall over northern and eastern  areas during morning period . Winds will be fresh to strong at times causing blowing dust / sands over open land reducing the horizontal visibility at times.  Sea will be rough to very rough.

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has urged motorists to be extra cautious on the roads due to low horizontal visibility caused by dust and sand stirred up by the winds.

In a statement, the centre also warned of danger to mariners in the Arabian Gulf due to rough seas.

Earlier, Dubai residents wake up to light drizzle and dark clouds on Thursday morning.

Parents of school-going children who went out of their homes early in the morning to drop their children at the bus stop told Emirates 24|7 that the light rain was welcome after the recent increase in temperatures.

The NCMS forecasts unstable weather to continue affecting the country. Hazy to partial cloudy/cloudy weather in general.

The official forecaster says, "the cloud amount will increase over scattered areas with a chance of rain associated with different intensity, especially during night."

Fresh winds will be strong at times with cloud activity, and blow dust/ sands over open land areas reducing the horizontal visibility at times.

The temperature is also likely to drop considerably in certain areas.

However, the maximum temperature expected in the internal areas are in the range of 32-38 deg C. The minimum will be around 14-21 deg C.

The coastal areas will be slightly cooler with maximum temperature around 26-33 deg C and minimum hovering around 15-22 deg C.

Summer scorcher: Wet weather for next four days; mercury to hit 40°C

Brace yourself for a summer scorcher as temperatures are set to rise to nearly 40°Celsius despite predictions of scattered showers across the UAE over the next four days.

The unpredictable weather pattern is the ‘first transition period’ between winter and summer, according to the country’s National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), bringing about sudden changes in climate conditions that resulted in the morning rain experienced across the UAE on Tuesday morning.

Brief scattered showers are expected to continue over the next four days, with an increase in intensity on Friday morning, the NCMS stated.

The federal office stated: “As a result of the surface trough, which comes from the Red Sea and associated with trough in the upper air, as well as the movement of different clouds coming from the West towered the country, instability is expected over the country on Thursday and Friday, where the weather will be dusty and partly cloudy.

According to the centre, cloud amount will increase by Wednesday afternoon, with a chance of rain over coastal and northern areas by night and early morning.

“Similarly, there are chances of rain at different period[s] on Thursday, which will continue on Friday again over different areas with different rain intensities.” 

Dusty climes ahead

The NCMS stated the UAE was affected by fresh to strong south to south-easterly winds that caused dust and sand to blow across scattered areas, reducing horizontal visibility over different areas to less than 1,000 metres. Reduced visibility of 800 metres was recorded at Al Maktoum Airport on Monday.

Following Tuesday’s rainfall, on Wednesday the weather is expected to be dusty and partly cloudy at times.

Cloud cover will increase gradually by afternoon with possibility of some rain over some areas, especially over coastal and northern areas at night.

The wind will be moderate to fresh, and sea will be moderate to rough over Arabian Gulf and moderate over Oman Sea.

The cloud will ease gradually by early morning on Saturday, especially in the West, with possibility of some rain on the northern and eastern regions.

Despite the rains, the heat continues to intensify with the NCMS recording temperatures rising 4 to 6°C, with the highest in the country recorded 39.4°Celsius over Al Gheweifat.
