Dubai’s police engineers have developed a special camera that can hunt drivers who overtake other vehicles in hard shoulder areas and a senior officer said offenders would be fined Dh600 and have their cars impounded for one month.

Police published a film showing the new camera is ready for deployment and would be installed in areas which have witnessed persistent hard shoulder violations.

“This camera has been developed and designed by Dubai’s police and it has proved very efficient in catching violators,” traffic chief Colonel Saif Al Mazroui said.

Quoted by 'Emarat Al Youm' Arabic language daily, he said the new camera is light weight and portable and that it is equipped with special technology that can distinguish the yellow line in hard shoulder areas.

“This camera proved to be very effective during a field experience we carried out on Thursday. It is also much cheaper than imported traffic cameras,” he said.

He said police decided to develop such a device to hunt for motorists who overtake in hard shoulder areas following major accidents.

“Some drivers have been seen overtaking in hard shoulder areas at high speed. Many of them caused accidents with cars parked in that area,” he added.

As for penalties for such offences, he said drivers violating that area had been fined Dh600 but the penalty had been increased to include a one-confiscation of the vehicle after these offences persisted.
