Weather: Rains across UAE; chill at 4˚C

UAE residents woke up to a rainy morning today Monday, with light to moderate rains lashing different parts of the country.

Residents of Dubai and Sharjah reported rains in the early hours as motorists were seen cruising through cautiously. In Dubai, intermittent rains and dark clouds kept motorists at the end of their brakes during their morning commute. No major accidents have been repoprted so far (8.40am) even as Dubai Police and NCMS have requested drivers to be extra vigilant on the roads today.

Medium to heavy rain yesterday and today fell in several areas of Fujairah, which led to the accumulation of water in valleys and on the streets. Moderate rains also fell in the cities of Khor Fakkan, Dibba and Kalba.

The skies are still cloudy in several parts of the emirate, promising more rain.

Meanwhile, a chill is in the air as the cold snap continues across parts of the UAE, with temperatures dipping as low as 4 degree Celsius today while the wet weather will cast gloomy skies over the next two days.

The UAE’s National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) has said this “unstable weather” will also result in rough seas over the next 48 hours, with warnings issued to fishermen and beachgoers for the Arabian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.

Speaking to Emirates24|7, a spokesperson for the NCMS said: “We will witness an unstable weather pattern over the next 48 hours along the northern and the coastal region of the UAE, due to the low pressure in the upper atmosphere, which will bring in the cold snap in parts.”

He continued: “The temperatures in the mountains could dip as low as 4-5 degrees Celsius, especially the Ras Al Khaimah mountain range, with Jebel Jais standing at 1,500 metres.

“In comparison, the internal areas of the UAE will see temperatures at least 15 degrees higher during daytime, with the mercury dipping another five-odd degree late into the night.”

However, the mercury will maintain a cooler clime with rain on its way to bring in wet conditions over the next 48 hours.

“These will not be thunderstorms like the one we experienced last month, but rather a light to moderate chance of showers across the UAE, starting in the northern parts such as Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman and moving further south towards Sharjah, Dubai and Abu Dhabi.”

He continued: “The rain will increase the chances of stormy conditions over the Arabian Sea and the Oman sea, with high waves of over 12 feet and high tide predicted; fishermen and beach goers should take caution when stepping out into the sea.”

Yesterday, residents reported of light drizzle in parts of Jebel Ali and Ghantoot areas.
