A woman was killed after she was knocked over by a car while she was trying to cross a key road in Abu Dhabi, newspapers reported on Wednesday.
Police said the vehicle was apparently speeding when it hit the woman who also did not use the underpass constructed on Defence Road to curb recurrent accidents over the past years, some of which were deadly.
The accident took place on Monday and the “driver of that car had apparently not taken road users into consideration,” said Major Abdullah Al Suwaidi, director of the road accidents unit at the Abu Dhabi police.
“The woman also crossed the road in an area which is not designated for pedestrian crossing,” he said.
Defence Road, one of the busiest streets in the capital, had two large underpasses but many pedestrians still use illegal crossing through the fence erected in the middle of the road despite persistent police warnings.
