It was a day of health hazard discoveries on Thursday. A famous brand of chocolate in Ras Al Khaimah was found to contain worms while a cockroach was found in a meal at a popular grills restaurant in Abu Dhabi.

An Emirati man who bought chocolate for his little son from a shopping mall in RAK found the worms and tests later showed a large quantity of the sweets were also contaminated. Both the mall and the supplier were fined Dh10,000 by the RAK municipality, which tested the products.

The Dubai-based Arabic language daily, which carried the report, did not name the chocolate product but described it as a famous global brand.

“Tests on some sample showed they contained worms of various sizes and insect eggs although the date on them showed they are still valid,” the paper said.

It quoted health director Khalifa Al Maktoum as saying those products were infested with worms and other insects because of bad and unhealthy storage.

In Abu Dhabi, a woman who invited her friends for a grills meal at a popular restaurant was shocked to find a dead cockroach in her plate.

She got another shock when she told the restaurant manager, who simply replied that this is normal and that it had happened in many restaurants.

“The angry woman went straight to the Abu Dhabi Food Authority and filed a complaint…after verifying the complaint, the Authority decided to take stringent measures against that restaurant,” Emirat Alyoum Arabic language daily said without specifying those measures.

The paper quoted the woman, a public servant, as saying the restaurant should be shut down because of the “careless response” by the manager.
