Since its launch in 2000, the Sheikh Zayed Housing Programme (SZHP) has offered 29,000 housing assistance to the tune of Dh14 billion, Minister of Public Works and SZHP Chairman said today.

Abdullah Al Nuaimi disclosed that 17,700 houses had been built while 11,800 are currently under-construction.

Al Nuami told a media briefing that expenditure on housing assistance projects stood at Dh9 billion, a figure underscores the programme's commitment to provide adequate homes to citizens.

The minister said that the programme was paying special attention to 1,800 applicants from widows, divorcees and persons with special needs under directives given by the Committee on the Follow up of the President's Initiatives.

''Acting upon instructions from the government, the SZHP is currently preparing a national housing strategy whose prime objective is to coordinate and unify efforts and operations of federal and local and to establish a common housing data base for sharing information,'' he said.

The programme, he added, were mulling over a proposal to raise the ceiling of housing assistance and loans to allow more citizens access to these financial facilities.

Currently, the programme is building 380 houses in Ajman, 420 houses in Ras Al Khaimah and 520 houses in Umm Al Qaiwain.
