Zebra crossing violations: Dubai Traffic Police fine 45,000 generating Dh9m

Traffic Police launch campaign to stop pedestrian deaths

In 2012, Dubai Police issued traffic fines of Dh 200 each to 45,000 pedestrians for crossing roads at points where there was no zebra crossing, Dubai Traffic Police Director General Major General Mohammed Saif Al Safeen said.

Revenue of Dh 9 million was generated from these fines.

The Traffic Police will be starting a campaign against pedestrian deaths.

The campaign will be kick-started by issuing pedestrian safety manuals in English, Arabic, Hindi, Bengali, Malayalam and Urdu.

These will be distributed in major labour camps and through the sales network of Al Bayan Water Company, which covers many residential and labour camps in Dubai.

Most of those fined for illegal crossing of the road are South Asians.

Forty-two pedestrians died in different road accidents last year.

Last week, an Indian salesman was crushed to death while he ventured to cross the Al Etihad Road late at night.

It would be great if the police would also start fining cars for not yielding to pedestrians at designated crossings. The reason most pedestrians do not use zebra crossings after all is that it makes it no difference in terms of safety where you cross ... I get honked at when crossing at zebra crossings!

Where the zebra crossing is too far, in that case people have to cross the road. For example the dubai sharjah al Nahda area. The signal is soo far away that people have to cross the road. There the police take fines. But I request RTA to use the fine value to build a walk way bridge to avoid accidents. I have seen there are walk way bridges. Kindly build one near the sharjah dubai al nadha area that is near Sahara Center. Thank You.

Lack of Awareness seems to be the main cause of not giving way to Pedestrians. I generally stop at Zebra Crossings if a Pedestrian is intending to cross but the cars behind me and parallel to be show no regard hence risking my life with the Pedestrian, not forgetting the children in the back seat. Strong videos should be shown and heavy fines should follow if any one attempts to break the rules. In the end of the day, these rules are for the Safety of You, Me and Us.

Brochures for Zebra crossing should not only be aimed at pedestrian but for motorist too. I live and work in Tecom, there aren't too many crossings here. Every time I've attempted to cross through zebra crossings, motorist seem to speed up. I have nearly missed being hit by cars on numerous occasions. Pedestrian should be given priority when crossing from a zebra crossing - MOTORIST NEED TO UNDERSTAND THAT TOO!

In Dubai Silicon Oasis, While you walk on the pedisterian crossings most drivers know there are no police or security around so they just drive over even when people cross as in to intimediate or scare. Its happen so many times, so I wait for a long while till someone stops or the roads are clear. This is beside the Greenbelt Supermarket.

It's about time the Police fine drivers who don't stop at zebra crossings, even when other cars are stopping and the pedestrians must run or jump for their lives.
