A Saudi killer waiting in jail for the swordsman to drag him to the execution square got the happiest shock in his life. The one who finally came was not the executioner but the victim’s father who pardoned him.

But the father had one condition—the killer must memorize parts of the Koran before he is released, a condition which the prisoner happily accepted.

Faisal Al Amiri stabbed Abdullah Al Dousari to death during a fight in the eastern town of Dammam a few years ago. He was sentenced to death, prompting relatives to try and persuade the victim’s family to pardon him.

“Dousari’s father insisted on visiting Amiri in jail to tell him he had pardoned him…..he told him that he first must memorize parts of the holy Koran before he is released from jail,” Alsaudi newspaper said, adding that Dousari’s father refused to accept diya (blood money) in return for the pardon.

Under Islamic law, which is strictly implemented in Saudi Arabia, a killer could walk free if pardoned by the victim’s relatives in return for diya.
