Labour Card to be replaced by Emirates ID

Minister says expatriates will no longer need Labour Card in late 2012

Expatriates will no longer need to have a Labour Card when a decision to replace it with the national identity card is enforced in the second half of 2012, the Minister of Labour was reported on Thursday as saying.

Saqr Gobash said the Ministry of Labour is awaiting a decision by the Emirates National Identity Authority (Eida) to cancel the Labour Card and replace it with the ID when all foreigners in the UAE are registered.

“After the completion of ID registration of all expatriates in the country, the Labour Card will be abolished and replaced by the National ID,” Gobash told the Sharjah-based Arabic language daily Alkhaleej.

“The Ministry of Labour will scrap all Labour Cards once it receives a request from Eida….there will be no need for all expatriates to carry too many cards after the ID registration is completed in the second half of 2012.”
