Mohammed reviews Dubai green projects

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Tuesday visited Dubai Municipality, where he praised the progress of various ongoing projects which are part of His Highness’ vision for a green and sustainable city by 2021.

Sheikh Mohammed was accompanied by Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, Director of Dubai Ruler's Court Mohammed Ibrahim Al Shebanni, and Director-General of the Department of Protocol in Dubai Khalifa Saeed Suleiman, where they inspected major projects including Dubai Convention Center, Safari Golf, Vertical Industrial City, sewerage  tunnels, Dubai Steps, Hardware, Bicycles and Green Building Market.

Hussain Lootah, Director-General of Dubai Municipality, and his assistants gave His Highness and the accompanied delegation a detailed presentation for each project.

Convention Center Project

The Convention Center Project spans 5 hectares and includes Rashid Main Hall, which will have a capacity to seat 10,000 people, along with several sub halls, a congress, two hotels and offices, in addition to Mohammed Bin Rashid Library, and car parking with a capacity for 2,000 vehicles.

Gulf Safari

Gulf Safari project spreads across 100 hectares, including a 70 hectare golf course and a service area extending 30 hectares along with a golf-training academy. The Safari project will be open to everyone with a fee to be set by the municipality.

Vertical Industrial City

Vertical Industrial City is a fully integrated industrial city that spans on 280 hectares, and includes three areas - industrial, apartments/hotels and a business park.

Sewerage Tunnels project

Meanwhile, sewerage tunnels project is one the strategic projects as it will help scrapping, when completed in 2020, the 121 sewerage pumping stations located across the city. The tunnels are sustainable of 4-6 meters width, which can last for up to 100 years, slash carbon emissions and help energy saving by 30 per cent.

Dubai Steps

Dubai Steps is a cultural and sport project with includes 500 stairs symbolizing the challenges and progress of Dubai. The location of the project has not been set yet.

Hardware and Bicycles Market

Hardware and Bicycles Market in Warsan area covers an area of 11 hectares, and will include 100 shops and 53 showroom for bicycles. The Market spreads across 460,000 square feet area and is set to be completed by end-September 2016. It also includes a section for the sales of construction materials, car parking and four solar power generation panels.

Green Buildings

Sheikh Mohammed signed Dubai’s green building chart that classifies green buildings in Dubai into four categories gold, silver, bronze and platinum. Lootah expects the classification to be implemented in the first half of October, and set to slash carbon emissions by 34 per cent equal to 7 million tonnes of carbon that is equivalent of planting 36 million trees in the city in the first 5 years.

Sheikh Mohammed praised the ongoing projects that he considers ‘necessary and strategic’ for the future of the nation and the next generations. His Highness also asked Dubai Municipality to go ahead with the proposed projects. 

Mohammed orders convening Government Summit in February

As per the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 5th World Government Summit will be held from February 12 to 14, 2017.

The Summit will expand its agenda and session topics to include economy and finance as well as health, education and government services. It will also discuss a number of themes directly related to the lives of people and various segments of the society all over the world.

Ohood bint Khalfan Al Roumi, Minister of State for Happiness and Vice Chairman of the Organising Committee of the World Government Summit, stated that the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, emphasise the importance of bringing in a set of qualitative changes to the agenda of the fifth edition of the Summit.

She noted that the next Summit would see a number of positive changes, including opening up the Summit for participation from companies and organisations.

Nominated representatives of companies and organisations will be able to participate in the sessions that discuss topics of relevance to the future in key sectors such as education, health, government services, future of science, innovation, technology, economy, development, sustainability, and the cities of the future.

Al Roumi added that the dynamic changes being brought about in the Summit come in line with its unique position as an international organisation that works throughout the year to produce knowledge for future governments.

In its new identity, the Summit is focused on launching global reports and indices as well as establishing a new partnership with International Monetary Fund. It will also enhance its partnerships with major international organisations, including the United Nations, World Bank, Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and World Economic Forum, in addition to the Arab League and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.

She stated that the Organising Committee is keen to employ the latest innovations, technologies and communication channels to broadcast the sessions of the Summit over three days for interested people and students from all over the world.

Al Roumi also said that the World Government Summit will continue to attract the best international practices and outstanding experiences as well as host an Annual Guest of the Summit to showcase various experiences in the fields related to the governments of the future.

She added that the Organising Committee is currently working on preparing a rich agenda and a set of highly engaging events with the participation of leading international speakers, government officials, partners and entrepreneurs who will highlight the role of successful future governments and the most important strategic plans in the short, medium and long term to improve the quality of government performance.

More than 4,500 participants from 130 countries attended the 4th World Government Summit which witnessed an address by US President Barack Obama and a dialogue on the future of government conducted by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

The last edition also included shorter sessions to facilitate more engagement between speakers and the audience, and the use of an application for active communication with participants. The 4th Summit also featured the Edge of Government exhibition organised by Mohammed Bin Rashid Centre for Government Innovation as well as the Annual Guest of Honor, and the ‘Best Minister in the World’ award.
