A UAE humanitarian convoy consisting of 57 trucks with essential food items and medical supplies left Rafah  on Sunday for Gaza.

The aid convoy was sent by UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) as per directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The humanitarian initiative is closely followed up by Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority.

The Board Chairman of RCA Ahmed Humaid Al Mazroui said that 55 trucks are laden with food items while the other two trucks carry medicines and vital medical supplies.

"The convoy is not the first of its kind being sent to our brothers in Palestine, this is the fifth in a series of aid dispatches which comes under the humanitarian program implemented by the Red Crescent under directives from the country's leadership to help the Palestinian people and improve their living conditions,” said Al Mazroui.

The current dispatch comes ahead of Ramadan and includes large quantities of food and medical supplies which were purchased from various Egyptian markets in a record time, he added.

The total value of projects carried out by the Red Crescent Authority recently in the Palestinian territories amounted to about Dh1 billion. Nearly threefolds of this amount have been spent by the RCA in Palestine on various projects since its inception, added Al Mazroui.

The RCA also thanked Egypt for facilitating the crossover of the UAE convoy across the Rafah checkpoint and lauded the efforts of the Egyptian First Lady and Chairperson of the Egyptian Red Crescent Suzan Mubarak.
