Major fire guts flats in 40-floor residential building in Sharjah

Residents escape unhurt, but fear many pets may have perished in the fire

A massive fire broke out at around 2:30 am on Saturday morning on the north side of Al Tayer buliding in the Al Nahda area of Sharjah.

Panic spread among the residents living in the building when fire broke out but they managed to escape unhurt.

But residents fear many pets left behind by them in the 34 floor residential building may not survive the fire.

The reason for the blaze is still unknown.

Civil defense and police reacted fairly quickly and ambulances, firefighters were quickly dispatched. Cilvil defense team from Ajman also rushed to fire site.

However, the residents say they could not see any of the building management and officials during the whole incident.

Residents said the water to dowse the building fire came only an hour after the fire swathed the building.

Till 9:30 am flames could be seen in some of the floors and smoke billowing out of the building but none of the dozen or so fire tenders were seen doing anything.

The residents, who were stranded outside, were asked by the police to gather at the nearby Al Nahda park and register themselves.

Residents also claim that the water sprinklers or the smoke alarm system were out of service and did not work.

In fact some of the residents tried to put out the fire with the water hose in the building but there was no water there.

Eye witnesses say the fire was almost contained but since there was a delay in dispensing water the situation went out of control.

One of the angry residents said that there have been several fire incidents in Al Nahda area which is crowded with high rise buildings and by now the civil defense should have managed to work out a plan to deal with such situations that have hit Al Tayer building today.

Fire is a serious issue and its unfortunate that all the buildings are not equipped with proper fire safety alarms, water hose system etc despite of many past experiences in this area. Even in some buildings the cheap fire alarm systems false trigger every day and night making the tenants to lose trust on this. I think now its the time for authorities to make sure all safety systems are in place.

One thing I wish to bring to the notice of the authorities is about the fire exits in the buildings around here. We need to make the residents aware about the need to keep the fire exits free of blockages - clean and neat and that they are not to be used to dispose rubbish, furnitures etc. These could only block our way in such a case of an emergency and could potentially be a major cause for many deaths.

agree with Ishaq, in the UK aluminiums are being proposed to be banned on offshore/onshore structures and expected to take effect this year!

The cause of spread of fire is aluminum cladding and more than 50 percent building have this .This is a thin aluminum sheet which catches fire easily and not only spreads but the flying splinters result in more fire therefore it is requested from the press and the building authorities to raise this issue and ban the use of combustable materials in the construction sector.

There is a strong gut feeling that all these massive mysterious fires are caused due to the Centralized gas pipeline, but noone's willing to look into it or accept it. It is impossible that a cigarette butt or some barbecue fire leads to firing up the entire building, doesn't make sense.

At around 2 am i heard the alarming sounds of fire fighters, police and ambulance. I thought it was a dream, but wasn't to be. I wish it was.
