Mother of Lieutenant Pilot Sultan Salem Al Suwaidi says she still feels the presence of her son at home after all these years. He was martyred in August 2003 when his plane crashed during a military drill, reported Emarat Al Youm.

Recalling the fond memories of her son, Al Suwaidi’s mother says that his spirit is with her and that she can smell him, too. The family is extremely proud of him, she adds.

Al Suwaidi had graduated from France and was appointed First Lieutenant Pilot. “He was not married. He was 27 years old when he was martyred,” says his mother.

Al Suwaidi – sixth among her eight sons - was an example of a good son and a noble human being, says the mother and adds that he supported the family after his father passed away.

He always accompanied his dad on trips abroad for treatment until he died a few years before Al Suwaidi attained martyrdom.

“He will always have a special place in my heart,” she says. “He was very supportive, obedient and fulfilled all my wishes without asking me anything. Whenever I asked him for something, he always answered ‘Insha’a Allah [God Willing] and it was done,” she recalls.

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, visited us during the mourning period. “It was such a great gesture. His words gave us peace,” she says.

“I remember telling His Highness that Sultan was our son but you brought him up and educated him,” she recalls.
