Mercury touches 45°C in Ras Al Khaimah

The temperatures across the emirates have shot up over the last few days as mercury touched 45°C for the first time this year.

Ras Al Khaimah recorded the hottest day so far with a maximum of 45°C on Saturday, while Sharjah followed closely behind at 44°C.

Among all the emirates, Fujairah was the coolest with maximum temperature still hovering around mid-thirties, the Gulf Today quoted a Met source as saying.

Off the shore, the maximum May temperature this year has been recorded at 48°C at Riyasat Island in the West Coast, thankfully it is still way below all-time peak of 52°C recorded in May of 2001.

The National Centre for Meteorology and Seismology predicted a hot and hazy week ahead, which would at times get dusty and cloudy particularly in the eastern mountainous region.

After a belated start, the GCC summer is back with all its elements of extreme heat, dust and haze with temperatures across Arabian Peninsula hovering around 45°C, which will continue to rise as the summer peaks in the next three months.

As the land mass heats up, the temperature of the Gulf water also rises. Most of the fish varieties go deep into the Arabian Sea to save themselves from the hot and less oxygenated water of the Gulf, which results in reduced fish catch and higher prices, particularly of sought after varieties such as homur and kingfish.
