Most Reputable Cities in the World: Dubai moves up rankings

Dubai’s reputation as one of the world’s best cities has once again been underlined in a new survey.

The New York-based Reputation Institute, a global reputation-based advisory firm, has put emirate at the 41st position among the 100 most reputable cities in the world.

In 2012, Dubai was placed 47th. The ranking is expected to further strengthen Dubai’s position to win the bid to host World Expo 2020 in the UAE.

The emirate is now ahead of Los Angeles, Singapore and Hong Kong on Reputation Institute’s latest ranking.

The Reputation Institute’s rankings surveyed 22,000 people in G8 countries between January and February 2013.

The rankings evaluate each city according to 13 criteria that are grouped into three broad categories: advanced economy, appealing environment and effective government.

Sydney topped the list of cities with best reputation among 100 major cities, with Toronto and Stockholm taking the second and third place, respectively.

The results highlight the key drivers of a good reputation: the beauty of the urban environment (the most influential); safety; the cultural, gastronomy and entertainment offering; or standards of living, all of which are common characteristics of the top cities.
The new report confirmed a link between a city’s reputation and economic outcomes.

“People have images of a city on their mind when they are deciding to go on holiday there, to live or work there, or to buy products originated there.

“Our modeling demonstrates that a city that knows how to effectively manage its reputation can attract more tourists, greater investment or a bigger influx of talent,” Fernando Prado, responsible for the Place Reputation Unit of Reputation Institute, said.

Besides, the report pointed out that managing large cities was quite complicated than mid-sized cities.
“This is one of the reasons that explain why, with the exception of London, the top ten in the RepTrak Study features only medium-sized cities.

“Our study shows us that those managing cities also need to pay attention to the finer details that ultimately define the relationship with stakeholders, rather than focus solely on the headline figures of tourist arrivals or product sales,” Prado said.

Shanghai, the most reputable city in China, was ranked 75, while New York, the most populous city in the United States, was ranked at 21, one place above Paris.

Baghad was placed at the bottom of the list, with Tehran coming second to last, preceded by Karachi, Nairobi and Cairo.

Last month, the Reputation Institute put Dubai on top of the cities to invest in with Abu Dhabi taking the second slot.

The two UAE cities beat other cities like Zurich, Geneva and New York.
