Tremors in UAE; 3 quakes in Oman and Iran

Three earthquakes hit the sea off Oman and Iran even as UAE residents felt several mild tremors on Sunday evening.

According to a statement issued by the National Centre of Seismology and Meteorology (NCMS), the National Seismic Network Station that monitors earthquakes, recorded three earthquakes this evening in the sea off Oman and Makran (Iran).

The first one was recorded 33kms north of Fujairah in the sea with a magnitudes of 3.8 at at 8.13pm.

The second one was of 4.6 magnitude, 200kms northeast of Fujairah at 8:38pm and the third one was recorded at 9:07pm local time about 27kms north of Fujairah with a magnitude of 3.1.

NCMS confirmed that several residents in the Northern Emirates felt the tremors.

Several residents of Fujairah and Massafi even called the police emergency numbers in panic.

According to Mujeeb Abubaker, a resident of Masafi, several residents rushed out of their apartments as soon as they felt the tremors.

“There was a big sound and a bang. Everything started shaking. People just started rushing out of their apartments,” he said.

According to him an Indian was injured when an iron rod fixed on top of a building fell on his leg.

“Police were seen rushing to the spot to help him,” he added.

Yusuf Ali, another Indian worker said many tremors were felt in Dibba as well.

“Tables and laptops were left shaking. People were scared and hence rushed out of their homes. However, the tremors lasted just for a few seconds,” he added.
