A suspected shoplifter died in the central Philippine city of Cebu following an epilepsy attack that occurred while he was being arrested by members of a mall’s customer intelligence (CI).

Mario Alfie Ducay, of legal age, was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in the city on Friday night, according to Manuel Cañete, chief of the Homicide Division of Cebu City Police.

Cañete said that CI members questioned the suspect while inside the Gaisano Metro Mall, as he could not show them receipts of the goods that he supposedly bought from the mall’s hypermarket.

The tabloid ‘Pilipino Star Ngayon’ also quoted Cañete as saying that the suspect suddenly shook violently when the CI moved to arrest him, then he dropped on the floor and was seen with his mouth frothing—allegedly an attack of epilepsy.

According to police investigation, Ducay, whose body was submitted for autopsy, had a previous record of shoplifting.
