Pregnant woman jailed to stop heroin use seeks bail

A pregnant Alabama woman who was jailed to keep her from using heroin is asking a judge to allow her release on bail.

A Jefferson County judge scheduled a hearing Thursday afternoon to consider the request by 21-year-old Alexandra Laird of Pleasant Grove.

Laird was indicted earlier this year after a daughter was born addicted to heroin. She's now pregnant again, and al.com reports Laird was arrested earlier this month after authorities say she admitted using heroin regularly while pregnant.

Laird's lawyer is asking a judge to approve bail, but prosecutors oppose the request. Authorities say she needs to remain in custody to keep her away from heroin.

Laird is asking to go into a treatment program where she could take medication to protect the fetus from opioid addiction.
