682 divorces in Saudi in 12 days

Saudi Arabia recorded 682 divorce cases in 12 days, a daily average of 57 cases, one of the highest divorce rates in the world, a newspaper said on Monday.

Justice ministry statistics showed the southern town of Makkah had the highest divorce rate in the Gulf Kingdom, recording 92 cases in the first 12 days of the new Hijri Year that started last week, according to Sharq newspaper.

Saudi officials have spoken of a sharp rise in divorce cases over the past years, with such cases exceeding 30,000 in 2012.

Official data showed nearly 90 per cent of the divorce cases involved Saudis who were married to Saudi women, standing at nearly 27,000 cases.
