90-year-old Saudi to get 100 lashes

A 90-year-old Saudi man will be lashed 100 times with the whip after he was convicted of smashing the windscreen of a judge’s car to retaliate against a previous verdict against him, a local newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The court in the central town of Taif found the old man guilty of damaging the judge’s car while he was preaching at a local mosque during open-air Friday prayers, Sahafaonline Arabic language paper said.

The man told court that he had done so in reprisal for an earlier sentence against him by the judge, the paper said. “The court sentenced the man to 100 lashes and seven days in prison,” it added.

I am trying to help them by myself so that they come out of the misery. I, therefore, request you please find out from your friends and companies who like to come forward in this relief work and donate funds.

Flood in Pakistan: I like to mention that nowadays the whole of Pakistan along with my village is hit by floods. My village is very far from Islamabad, therefore chances of official relief reaching there are very remote. Moreover, most of the people are very poor, so the residents will not be able to help the needy.

How can you punish a 90-year-old man, Khdmohd?
  • Mohammad 7 September 2010 10:26
Initially when I saw this news, I thought this old guy must have commited a bad sin. But, now I think this is nothing but simply a bad judgement by this Judge. For breaking a car's screen, you just ask him to pay the fine and stay in jail.

100 lashes for 90 years old! And the judge gave this punishment by himself for his own case! Come on people, how can this be allowed?

It is amazing you people! You are judging the picture if it illustrates the right act or not! The idea is we are in the 21st century and such behaviour has disappeared very long back. You are asked to express your opinion on the act not the picture!

24|7 has shown professional journalism in the past and should do so now. Leaving aside the issue on law; the picture is in no way a true portrayel or a balanced image of how this punishment is carried out in Saudi Arabia. The reporter has duty of care to report ethically and honestly. Editor - thank you for your comment. Incidently, this picture was illustrative from a wire agency and its caption mentioned it was a lashing sentence being carried out in Saudi Arabia.

I condemn this punishment on a man of this age and also those who seek to justify it.

Since when does a plaintiff get to judge his own case? Real judges are not allowed to judge cases involving themselves.
  • Michael Akkawi 4 September 2010 03:58
The solution is simple: replace the Saudi law with Civil Law.

This picture was not taken in Saudi Arabia, this is not what our law enforcement wear and they are not allowed to raise their hands this high to lash people. They keep a book or a bottle under their armpits so they can't raise their hands high. If he is 90, he should have not broken the windshield of a judge's car, and if he is 90 a 100 lashes is better than 5 years in jail!!!!

God says to forgive. But if we humans cannot forgive one another, how can God forgive us from our sins?
  • Ipstac 1 September 2010 22:47
By doing this act, the judge is taking his personal vengeance. I would suggest the judge gets the 100 lashes for giving such a punishment. There should be some legitimate reason why the elderly person tripped.

Last time I looked at my calender I saw 2010. When I read this, I was back to the stone age.

How amazing that Allah has allowed this man to live for 90 years and that fact is not respected. Yes, the incident reported is not the best way to handled displeasure with establishment but such strong opinions at his age might be the reason for his long life. I hope that his lashes are waived. Regards, Maryam

Frankly, I think giving a 90-year-old man lashes like this is barbaric.
  • Ajeesh 1 September 2010 14:57
This is not a good punishment in public.
  • Moe 1 September 2010 10:37
    I fully agree with Khdmohd
  • Khdmohd 1 September 2010 10:31
The picture reflects the wrong message. The legal lashes are not to leave marks as shown. Anyway I have witnessed many lashings and they are light except for the last 10 they look and sound painful. On the other hand, the old man deserves the lashes for the behaviour he presented. All charges can be dropped by the complainant.

Such harshness is a major deviation from the judicial system during earlier times.
