‘Absconder’ pays Dh10k for job

An Egyptian, who sold land in his home country to pay Dh10,000 to a compatriot for a work visa in Dubai, was shocked to learn he was reported an absconder. The case is being heard in Dubai Court.

AM, 39, who owns a trading company in Dubai, allegedly promised MA, 21, a job as a clerk in his firm. MA’s uncle, who is a common friend of AM, asked him to pay a fee of Dh10,000 for visa procedures.

MA testified, “I sold a farming land and sent the amount to my uncle through a money exchange company. My uncle received the amount and paid it to AM through another friend SH.”

“I arrived in Dubai and stayed with my uncle waiting for AM to give me the job. I made many calls, but he did not respond. I also went to his company, but I was ignored. After waiting for long, I approached Labour Ministry and lodged a complaint in August 2015.”

MA continued: “I was shocked to learn that AM had reported me as an absconder. He had forged my signature on a labour contract. I have not signed any labour contract.”

According to investigators, AM then bargained with MA and asked him to withdraw the complaint and he in turn promised to withdraw the ‘absconding’ complaint. However, when MA withdrew his complaint, AM refused to cancel the ‘absconding’ report filed by him.

Then MA sought police help.

MA’s uncle repeated the same details.

Investigations have confirmed that the signature of MA on the labour contract that AM submitted to the Labour Ministry was forged.

The court is adjourned to August 3.
