Yemen’s national resistance backed by Arab coalition ground and air force launched an assault on Saturday to seize Taiz city, which has been besieged by the Houthis and their allies for several weeks, press reports said on Sunday.

Heavy fighting erupted as resistance fighters battled their way towards the stricken Western city, where thousands of people have been killed and key facilities destroyed in random Houthi shelling over the past weeks.

“The allied resistance fights backed by the coalition forces in air and on the ground launched an attack yesterday to liberate Taiz from the coup rebels,” the UAE Arabic language daily ‘Al Khaleej’ said in a report from Aden.

Another paper said the coalition and resistance forces have fought their way towards the Houthi’s central security camp for the first time since battles erupted in April.

“The legitimate forces are now close to that camp. This is a great achievement,” the semi-official UAE daily ‘Al Ittihad’ said, quoting a resistance field commander.

‘Al Khaleej’, meanwhile, revealed that the Iranian-backed Houthis and forces loyal to toppled president Ali Abdullah Saleh have sent out an ‘SOS’ from their positions in the Jahran town in the Western Dhamar province.

“They have sent out a signal demanding reinforcements after many rebel fighters fled their positions in that town,” the paper said.

It said the signal disclosed that 27 rebel fighters and 19 coup Republican Guards have been killed in operations in that town.

It also mentioned that 63 others have been injured and that three ammunition depots have been destroyed.
