Doctors at the hospital had told the relatives that Rayan Abdukl Aziz Al Shahrani was clinically dead after suffering from brain damage and that he had a 5 per cent chance to recover.

His grandfather Ali Al Shahrani said he believed the doctors but that he was optimistic had “great faith” in God that the boy would survive.

“I did not leave his room and did not stop praying for him. Suddenly my grandson woke up and shouted for his father and mother,” Shahrani told Sabq newspaper.

The paper said the boy’s 33-year-old mother, Shafiya, died along with three younger brothers and sisters in the accident near the southern town of Khurma.

His father and the remaining family members survived with light to medium injuries in the accident, which the father blamed on stray camels.

“Doctors could hardly believe when Rayan woke up. I call on all to pray for the full recovery of Rayan and for mercy for those who died in his family,” Shahrani said.
