Saudi Arabia’s feared Islamic police arrested a local man and his alleged girlfriend for meeting at a coffee shop in a famous shopping mall in violation of existing rules in the conservative Gulf Kingdom, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.
Members of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, making a routine patrol to ensure public discipline at the mall, suspected the couple as they sat close to each other sipping their cold drinks.
“When the Commission members came to them and checked their identity, the girl was confused as they tried to justify her act,” Sabq Arabic language daily said in a report from the central town of Onaiza.
“The man told them he had known the girl for three months and that he had met her more than once… the two were arrested on charges of an illegal meeting.”
