The visa-on-arrival scheme Iran announced for its neighbouring countries does not include citizens of the GCC states.

The plan to open up to its neighbours, as announced by Iran’s foreign minister Manouchehr Mouttaki, includes only Syria – whose citizens already enjoy the facility -- from the Arab region, reports Gulf News.

A statement carried by Iranian media on Monday had quoted Mouttaki as announcing “lifting of visa requirements for visitors from neighbouring countries.”

Iranian news agency Irna quoted the minister as saying Tehran would soon finalise a deal to extend the visa-on-arrival facility to citizens of Georgia. It had recently lifted pre-boarding visa requirements for citizens of Turkey and Azerbaijan.

Among its other neighbours, citizens of Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan need to obtain a visa before they exit their respective countries.
Citizens of the US, UK, Columbia and Somalia are listed as those requiring special clearance before being issued visas.
