How Delhi Police is using WhatsApp to nab corrupt officers

Delhi Police have launched a new WhatsApp helpline number on which residents can send in their complaints against corrupt police officers and it promises to take immediate action.

Advertisements in several Hindi and English newspapers as well as on radio channels are being issued by Delhi Police informing the public of the new helpline.

The number (9910641064) was launched three days ago and action has already been taken against three officers, G.C. Dwivedi, Additional Commissioner of Police (Vigilance), Delhi Police, has been quoted as saying.

Besides calling, complainants can also send in recorded audio or video clips, and action is promised to be taken within hours.

The 24x7 helpline isn’t without its usual outfalls though. Dwivedi said that of the 43 ‘complaints’ received in the first three days, just five turned out to be genuine. The department apparently sends in the video clips to its forensic laboratory to confirm its authenticity before initiating any action against the accused officer.

Once the authenticity of the complaint is assured, the department quickly contacts the complainant to get further details while informing a senior of the officer concerned, and it is usually followed with the immediate suspension of the accused.
