A Saudi farmer has invited his counterparts from other Gulf states for a rare chicken event — not a barbecue but a beauty contest.

Scores of live chicken and cocks will line up at the farm for what is believed to be the first pageantry in the region to involve poultry.

Saudi farmer Mutaab Al Othman said he would stage the event at his farm near the capital Riyadh on Friday and that he has invited farmers from all other Gulf nations.

“The contest will also include an auction for rare chicken…some of the chicken have already participated in a similar contest in Germany and achieved good positions,” he said, quoted by the Saudi Arabic language daily Sabq.

Al Othman said the chicken on show could fetch SR2,000-10,000 each at the auction, adding that some breed were sold for more than SR35,000 in a previous auction.

He did not make clear how they would choose the most beautiful chicken.

Saudi Arabia, the largest Gulf country, has already hosted beauty contests involving horses, camels, goats and falcons.
