Siamese twins saved in 17-hour operation

Saudi doctors separated a Sudanese Siamese twins in a 17-hour operation described by the chief surgeon as the most difficult separation operation in the Gulf kingdom.

But doctors said one boy retained his urinary organs as they two babies had only one genital system, according to local newspapers.

Former Saudi health minister Dr Abdullah Al Rabeia, an adviser at the Royal Court, led a team of surgeons to perform the nine-stage operation at the King Abdul Aziz medical city in the capital Riyadh.

“It was the most difficult Siamese separation operation in the country but it was successful,” he said.
