A Saudi woman caught driving a car by a policeman defiantly told him that she is not a criminal to be arrested. The cop said women in the conservative Gulf Kingdom are not allowed to drive.

A YouTube film published in Sada newspaper showed the woman was still in her car as she argued with the policeman who stopped her on the road.

“We are not criminals or thieves. All we are doing is driving,” she told the policeman. “I am sure that if I were a 15-year-old boy, you will not stop me although boys at this age are totally banned from driving cars in the country.”

Sada said the police man replied :”A boy may not be allowed to drive at a certain age but the problem is that all women are banned from driving regardless of their age.”

Singing is permitted: Saudi scholar

An outspoken Saudi Islamic scholar has issued a fatwa (religious edict) permitting singing, triggering controversy within the religious community.

Sheikh Adel Al Kalbani said he had issued such a fatwa previously and that he still sticks to his views despite criticism from others.

“Yes I still stick to my opinion in this matter. I have said that singing with music is permitted and I have not retreated from that view,” he said, quoted by the Saudi Arabic language daily Ajel. “I have not regretted any fatwa or opinion I have issued.”
