Saudi men in sarcastic film on 'Manal Al-Shareef'

A Saudi man got behind the wheel, wrapped the head gear around his head and donned women’s glasses. He then shot a film of himself mimicking Saudi activist Manal Al Shareef and put the film on Youtube, which was also published by local newspapers.

Other Saudi men shot similar films as a way to demonstrate their opposition to lifting a long-standing ban on driving cars by women.

“These men wanted to express their resentment by what Manal Al Shareef has done…they recorded films of themselves to mimic her and show their sarcasm about her actions,” said Sharq daily, which ran two of those films.

Press reports on Wednesday said Manal had decided to quit a female campaign pressing for ending the ban on driving by women.

She took the decision inside the women’s prison in the eastern town of Dammam on Tuesday but denied she had been under any pressure. Manal was arrested on Saturday and jailed for five days.
